We made an effort to get an early start and frontload the days riding-it didn’t really work-we still road all day!
Most of our early start was used to traverse a web of urban cycling paths and city roads until the outskirts of Newcastle bled into another municipality 15 miles away: Sunderland. About 2.5 hours for 15 miles! Needless to say we were elated once we reconnected with the 4×6 inch blue cycling street signs-I never thought I could feel so passionately about a laminated blue and white painted book size sheet of metal.
We had a light snack, put away our phones and followed the signs on cycle paths, farm tracks, park ways and a couple quiet roads gently climbing up for a few hours. The incline was so subliminal we didn’t even realize we had summited any form of highland and until we let off on our effort and started coasting down a pleasant park path for a few miles.
A bit more navigation and a couple snacks brought us to our next Warmshowers host family in a Middlesborough row house. We washed up, ate up and fixed up before retiring into the guest room.
