Highlights->
We ate as much free breakfast as we could and then hit the road, following the coast a few miles until we angled inland to reach New Castle. Apart from a mile-ish stretch on a country road, we were able to travel a good ten miles on protected cycle paths: well paved, dedicated, shaded and signed paths. The UK urban and rural cycle network has totally spoiled Becca and myself for biking. We have been able to ride a majority of our route without sharing even an inch of pavement with cars or petrol vehicles. Now Becca and I are disappointed if we need to interact with cars at all. I now understand how proper cycling infrastructure can be so inviting for people to hop on their bike for a commute or errand. Navigation was a bit tiring, but I assume as a local, the familiarity makes things quicker.
We cycled on recreational paths along the river, stopping at a cycling friendly cafe to order food and eat our cheese sandwiches. Evening was spent walking into Newcastle, dining, and a nice walk back along the river.
Notes on Newcastle:
It is the only net exporting region of the UK.
It is a well intact city because it was bombed during “the war”
